What seeding is and why it matters
Seeding is ranking your entrants from best to worst, then arranging the bracket so the strongest don't collide early. A seed is just a number: the 1 seed is your top team, the 2 seed is next, on down to the last seed.
The whole point is fairness and a better final. If you drop teams in randomly, your two best could meet in round one and one of them is gone immediately. Seeding spreads the strong teams across the bracket so, on paper, the deeper a round is, the better the matchup. Top two can't meet before the final. Top four can't meet before the semis. Top eight can't meet before the quarters.

The standard seeding pattern: 1 vs N
The classic method pairs the top seed against the bottom seed, the 2 seed against the second-from-bottom, and so on toward the middle. In an 8-team bracket that's 1 vs 8, 2 vs 7, 3 vs 6, 4 vs 5.
For 16 teams it extends the same way: 1 vs 16, 2 vs 15, 3 vs 14, 4 vs 13, and so on. Every first-round matchup adds up to N+1. That's the snake people mean when they say 1-vs-N seeding.
The two halves of the bracket are then arranged so the 1 seed and 2 seed sit at opposite ends. If both win out, they only meet in the final. The 3 and 4 seeds anchor the two semifinals from the other side. EZ Bracket lays this out for you the moment you set the field.
- 8 teams: 1v8, 2v7, 3v6, 4v5.
- 16 teams: 1v16, 2v15, 3v14, 4v13, 5v12, 6v11, 7v10, 8v9.
- Each first-round pairing sums to N+1.
- 1 and 2 seeds are placed on opposite ends of the bracket.
Byes: how many and where they go
A clean single-elimination bracket needs a power-of-two field: 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128. When your entry count isn't one of those, you add byes to fill it up to the next power of two. A bye is a free pass through round one.
The math is simple. Byes = next power of two above N, minus N. Twelve teams round up to 16, so 16 minus 12 is 4 byes. Six teams round up to 8, so 8 minus 6 is 2 byes. Twenty teams round up to 32, so 12 byes.
Byes always go to the top seeds, because the best teams have earned the easier path. Give them to the lowest seeds and you'd hand a weak team a free win while making strong teams fight an extra round. So in a 12-team field, seeds 1 through 4 get byes and start in round two. Seeds 5 through 12 play round one: 5 vs 12, 6 vs 11, 7 vs 10, 8 vs 9. The four bye teams join the eight first-round winners for an eight-team second round, and from there it's a normal bracket.
Same idea for 6 teams: 2 byes to seeds 1 and 2, while 3 vs 6 and 4 vs 5 play in round one. Set your entrants in EZ Bracket and it figures out the bye count, assigns them to the right seeds, and draws the bracket. No manual fiddling.
